Greater Omaha designed its new state-of-the-art plant and processing facility to make beef exports to EU countries a reality. The company processes some 2 million pounds of beef each day. The shipment to Athens coincides with the company’s strategy to increase exports to EU countries as greater supplies of hormone-free cattle become available. The EU requires rigid documentation of cattle from birth to processing and on-site review before processing facilities can be certified. Of the fewer than a dozen farmers and ranchers certified by the USDA for EU export, more than half are from Nebraska.
